Volunteer on May 8 to help create Johns Creek Community Garden

Filed under: North Atlanta — Tags: , — Kathy and Ben @ 10:48 am

The “Carpe Diem” team of Leadership Johns Creek is asking for volunteers to help build Johns Creek’s first Community Garden.   The work day is scheduled for May 8 from 10am – 5pm- you can sign up here and follow the directions provided.  Should you have questions or issues signing up, call Brandon Freeman at 404-488-4494 or email him at brandonf@perimeter.org.

The Community Garden will consist of 30 raised beds at Newtown Park in an empty space next to a planned future senior center.  As envisioned, the garden will involve seniors, adults and families, providing opportunities for exercise, education, healthy food and creating a sense of community.  The planters will be 4 feet by 8 feet and available by lottery due to limited space.  The city will provide water- any other expenses will be the responsibility of the lottery winners.  More information about the cost and applications (lottery deadline is April 30) is available at The Leadership Johns Creek website.  If you have questions, contact Cindy Eade at 678-478-9354 or cindyeade@comcast.net.

So help out if you can on May 8 or sign up for a garden plot if you want to enjoy great fresh vegetables this summer!

Alpharetta Arts Streetfest this Saturday and Sunday

Metro Atlanta seems to come alive each Spring with festivals and events seemingly every weekend.  This weekend offers two days of outdoor arts in downtown Alpharetta GA with the Alpharetta Arts Streetfest.  According to the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau website, 80 jury-selected artists will showcase their fine paintings, mixed media, photography, pottery and jewelry, as well as textile, glass, wood, metal and paper art.

In addition, there will be a stage with live music and dance throughout both days and the delicious smells that come from street-fare food and desserts from local restaurants.  You’ll also have the chance to learn how to make earth-friendly crafts in a “Going Green” activities area.  And there are arts, crafts and the usual face painting for the kids and young at heart.  A handy Streetfest_2010_Flyer with entertainment times and map is available from the city website.

The Streetfest will take in downtown Alpharetta 10am – 6pm each day with galleries and stage on Milton Avenue west of Main Street- free parking is available at City Hall, Milton Center and of course the City of Alpharetta downtown parking lots.  More information can be found at the ACVB site (photo also courtesy of ACVB).  Don’t let this weekend’s weather forecast dampen your spirits- go and have some fun in downtown Alpharetta!

New I-575 interchange is coming to Woodstock GA

Filed under: Woodstock — Tags: , — Kathy and Ben @ 10:12 am

It looks like the finish line is finally in site for the I-575 Rope Mill Road interchange in Woodstock GAAccording to the Cherokee Ledger, the Georgia DOT has awarded Marietta-based C.W. Mathews a $17 million contract to construct the interchange- work may begin in April but must be completed by the end of 2012.  In addition to the interchange, the project involves building auxiliary lanes between Rope Mill and Towne Lake Parkway.

The new interchange should bring new life to commercial and residential development in the Ridgewalk area, which now includes only residential development.  Bill Butler of Ridgewalk Holdings LLC currently is the largest landowner, controlling 200 of the roughly 400 acres of the development.  Butler is currently working thru a Chapter 11 filing and hopes to present a new marketing and development plan for his acreage after re-emerging from the filing.

Another large landowner, Atlanta-based Cousins Properties, initially planned an upscale “The Avenue” development near the interchange but is now working with an outlet mall developer on the land they control.

Woodstock Mayor Donnie Henriques was excited to hear about the approval, stating that the city first discussed the interchange way back in 1976, with more diligent lobbying going back to the 1990s.  “It’s been a long time coming” and “It’s like a great weight off my shoulder.” according to the mayor.

We’re excited about the plans and believe the new exit will ease congestion in the area and spur further quality development for Woodstock.
