Community Garden Coming to Woodstock, GA

Woodstock GA community garden imageAccording to the Cherokee Tribune, Woodstock residents will soon have the opportunity to grow flowers and vegetables in a community garden setting.  After a successful pilot program last year, the city plans to offer 20-by-20 foot plots on land along Dobbs Road behind the Chattagoochee Technical College campus downtown.gardening in Woodstock

There will be 24 plots available on a first-come, first-served basis for city of Woodstock residents.  The registration fee is $25 and includes access to a shed to store gardening materials.  For more information, call 770-517-6788 or contact ppooser@woodstockga.gov

This is a great way to meet others with interests similar to yours and to have fresh vegetables for your family and friends if you live in a neighborhood that would frown upon you planting a garden.  So get your hands dirty and think green!

Cherokee County still purchasing land for Parks

At a time when other metro Atlanta counties have stopped purchasing land for parks due to the economy, Cherokee County is taking advantage of lower land prices.  According to a recent article in the AJC, the county will continue to purchase land as approved by voters in 2008 in a $90 million bond referendum.  Cherokee County has adopted a Capital Improvement Plan for 2010-2014 totaling over $93 million.  All cities and areas of the county, including Woodstock, Canton and Holly Springs, will benefit from the plan and bond issue.  To date, the county has issued $45 million in bonds and purchased 519 acres for additional parks and green space.

In just one example of the bargains the county is taking advantage of, Cherokee County Board of Commissioners chairman Buzz Ahrens recalled walking 140 acres of prime land three years ago that was envisioned for a new park. However, with a price of $50,000 an acre, the county passed. Last year the county was able to fulfill Ahren’s dream for the land and puchase it for a much better price of $30,000 an acre.

Yet county officials are being cautious to balance these purchases, taking into consideration lower county revenues due to lower property taxes collected, which has been caused by the lowered property values during this recession. According to Ahrens, “If we built them all out (parks), we couldn’t afford to operate them.” Hopefully, the economy will come back and we will be able to balance it all out.”

Our hope is that the commissioners in all of metro Atlanta will act as potential homebuyers should and take advantage of bargain prices to add additional park and greenspace throughout our region.

Hug a Tree in Observance of Arbor Day

Today  is National Arbor Day, a day to honor trees.  The history of Arbor Day is a history of celebration of the importance of trees to human life.  According to the Arbor Day Foundation, J. Sterling Morton in 1872 first proposed the adoption of Arbor Day.  Morton, a newspaper editor in Nebraska, used his writing skills to promote the value of planting trees to the newspaper’s readers.  In addition to providing fuel and building materials, he pointed out more importantly trees were needed for windbreaks to keep soil in place and provide shade in the hot sun.  He encouraged civic organizations and groups to join in the planting of trees which grew into a national movement to help land conversation. 

We all know in Atlanta how important trees are.  They create a beatiful green canopy over our city.  It’s one of our best features.  So today be a tree hugger and appreciate their beauty. 

Joyce Kilmer, poet, said it best in the poem Trees…

I THINK that I shall never see

IRS Deductions for Georgia Storm and Flood Victims

We hope you were not affected by the storms and floods last fall.  However, if you were impacted or know someone that was, the information below may be very beneficial.  Please feel free to pass this on to friends or family that may find the article helpful as well.

The following is a reprinted article from the Decatur Dispatch, January 2010.  

Georgians impacted by recent severe storms may be able to increase their standard deduction by claiming their net disaster losses suffered from the federally declared disaster. Provisions of the National Disaster Relief Act allow all taxpayers to claim the casualty loss deduction regardless of their income level. In addition, the law waives a requirement limiting casualty losses to those that exceeded 10% of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income.  

“Eligible taxpayers may be able to deduct disaster losses, even if they don’t itemize, through an increased standard deduction,” said IRS Spokesman Mark S. Green. “This increased deduction is limited to unreimbursed losses. You cannot claim losses that were covered by insurance.”  

The standard deduction is a dollar amount that reduces the amount of income on which you are taxed. It is a benefit that eliminates the need for many taxpayers to itemize actual deductions, such as medical expenses, charitable contributions, and taxes, on Schedule A of Form 1040.  

The increased standard deduction for disaster losses is a benefit that could help many Georgia residents. More than two-thirds of the returns filed by taxpayers each year claim the standard deduction instead of itemizing deductions.  

“It’s also important for taxpayers impacted by this federally-declared disaster to note this on their tax returns,” said Green. “They should write “Georgia/Severe Storms and Flooding” at the top of their tax returns and any other documents filed with the IRS to identify themselves as storm victims eligible for disaster relief.”

Congratulations to Carmel Elementary in Woodstock GA

A hearty congratulations goes out to Carmel Elementary School in Woodstock GA, recently selected as a 2010 Georgia School of Character by the Character Education Partnership (CEP), one of only two schools in Georgia recognized for this honor. The school is located just west of I-575 and north of Highway 92 and serves the nearby neighborhoods.

Carmel was recognized as a result of the school’s Learn and Serve program, in which students combine learning with community service projects. According to the AJC, the program is logged after Learn and Serve America, a national program that provides grants to schools that engage students in service-learning opportunities. Carmel Elementary School has been honored before for their program, winning the Promising Practices Award from CEP in 2006, 2207 and 2008.

While Carmel initially received funding from the state Department of Education, the school now operates the program without outside funding. Carmel is now in the running for the National Award– and we wish them the best!
